Faculty Research Interests

Astronomy and Astrophysics
David B. Friend, Associate Professor
Dan Reisenfeld, Assistant Professor

UM faculty conduct research in observational astronomy and space physics. This research includes observations of variable stars, participation in NASA satellite projects including the Cassini and Genesis projects, and investigation of water on Mars.

Atomic Physics and Laser Spectroscopy
James P. Jacobs, Professor

Professor Jacobs research area is experimental atomic physics and laser spectroscopy. This research includes measuring pressure shifts and broadening of the 253.7-nanometer intercombination line of mercury by nitrogen.

Plasma Physics
Eijiro Uchimoto, Professor
Andrew Ware, Professor

Our faculty are involved in ongoing research in theoretical and computational plasma physics. This research includes the study of equilibrium, stability, and transport properties of magnetic fusion energy plasmas. This work includes theory support for the Madison Symmetric Torus experiment at the University of Wisconsin and the design of the Quasi-Poloidal Stellarator experiment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Solid State Physics
Michael Schneider, Assistant Professor

The most recent addition to our faculty, Assistant Professor Michael Schneider, will be setting up his experimental solid state physics laboratory. Contact Prof. Schneider for more information.
